Seminar Series No. 1 • Thursday, March 7 • 8:30 pm–9:45 pm
1. Tony Campolo • The Church Has Left the Building • Rm 315
The Church is not called to be a self-perpetuating institution, but rather a movement that will change the world from what it is into what it ought to be. In this seminar, we will carefully look at how the Church can change the world, both on the micro level and on the macro level. We will talk about what local churches can do, as well as address the question as to how the Church can change the structures of society (i.e, the educational system, the political system, etc.). Imitating Jesus, we will call the Church to not use political power, but to speak from a position of authority to those who do have power. Also, we will consider what we can hope for in this world as we look forward to the end of history in which the kingdoms of this world will become the Kingdom of our God. In short, we will try to understand the role of the Church in the plans that God has as we move towards the return of Christ.
2. Don Cousins • Your Heart, the Key to Your Life • Rm 311 [CC] [YA]
Proverbs 4:12 states, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” When the Bible instructs us to do something “above all else,” we need to make note of what that “something” is. In this case, it’s “guard your heart.” Why is this so important? How are we to do it? What difference will it make? Come and discover why your heart holds the key to your life.
3. Doug Fields • Ministry and Your Own Marriage • Rm 323 B
Seasoned in marriage (28 years) and a veteran in ministry (30 years), Doug Fields has spent his entire marriage in church-based ministry and lives to tell about it. Great marriages are possible in the midst of ministry, stress, and others’ expectations. This workshop will explore the primary issues and offer helpful, practical and encouraging tips to keep your marriage headed in the right direction.
4. Sheldon Lacsina • Reservations for Two Leaders, Please • Rm 317 B
Whether you’ve just begun leading or are discipling a younger leader, this session will equip you on both sides of the leadership table. You will learn proven biblical values for catapulting you to be a successful leader in life and ministry. You will also learn valuable insight for the long haul. | 1 Timothy 4:12 “Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.”
5. Kenny Luck • Sleeping Giant: Giant Choices • Rm 328 [M]
Everybody gets it. In Session 1 of the Sleeping Giant track, we will explore the four choices that every God’s man must make in this hour of history for himself and for the Kingdom of God. When a man transforms, he transforms many things— mainly the lives of the women and children to whom they are connected. A spiritually energized and driven man is like a stick of dynamite creating a blast zone of life extending far beyond himself. Equally true, that same stick of dynamite can produce a blast zone of suffering. However, when a man can say “no” himself and “yes” to God and others, watch out. It’s our turn to choose. The lines are being drawn, the pressure is mounting, the stakes are massive for others. God’s man, you are a stick of dynamite. God’s men at HIM, we are the Sleeping Giant.
6. Karen Makishima • Bullying — A Kingdom Response to the Epidemic! • Rm 324 [YA]
Come and be reminded of how God has called us to defend the weak. We will explore strategies for protecting and rescuing the vulnerable and raising our children to be confident and courageous in fighting this battle. Psalm 72:4 “May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor.”
7. Carl Moore • Support the Message • Rm 323 A
Description not available at time of printing.
8. Aaron Niequist • Moving Beyond Singing into Something Much More Mysterious, Subversive and Beautiful • Rm 322 AB
Worship is a huge, beautiful, epic, mysterious, global, active, intimate human/divine interaction, but when someone says “Okay, it’s time to worship,” we all assume “it’s time to sing.” This is not bad, of course. Singing is a fantastic way to worship God. But it’s only a part of the whole. This breakout will explore ways to move beyond our usual framework, and in doing so, help more and more people engage with more and more of The Almighty God. Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.”
9. Shauna Niequist • Creating Transforming Friendships • Rm 323 C [CC] [YA]
Friendship is one of God’s greatest evidences of himself here on earth, a key way that He shapes us, heals us, and tells us the truth about ourselves. In this seminar, we will talk about honesty, authenticity, time, trust and other ways to build and experience transforming friendships. Romans 12:12 “Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.”
10. Janice Ogoshi • Seeking God’s Will Together: Becoming a Community of Discernment • Rm 319 B
We all want to know God’s will. But when we hear God’s voice, are we willing to do what God reveals to us — whatever it is? Discernment is a spiritual practice enabling us to know and do God’s will. At Hawai‘i Kai United Church of Christ, this practice has led to doing things like ministry planning, budget writing and leadership selection in unconventional and faith-stretching ways. Discernment has changed the way we minister together and has deepened our collective faith. In this seminar I will share a process for corporate discernment and lessons learned. 1 Samuel 3:10b “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
11. Don Piper • From Bitter to Better: Find a New Life After Tragedy and Loss • Rm 310
Death of a loved one, divorce, bankruptcy, loss of job, catastrophic injury…these tsunamis of life can destroy us or provide opportunities for a new normal. Following his death in a horrific car crash, Don Piper went from heavenly joy to earthly suffering and depression. Yet, he was transformed spiritually, found purpose in his pain, and a message in the mess. This session is all about hope for a better day and a better place.
12. Eva Piper • Not “IF” but “WHEN” • Rm 305 AB
Can you be ready when the bottom falls out of life? Is it possible? This session will explore four components needed to build a crucial life support system. Eva will discuss four areas that sustained her and her family during their time of tragedy. Crises come in many shapes and sizes, and each one has the power to knock us off our feet. We may be knocked down but we don’t have to be knocked out. Building a personal life support system gives us that extra advantage to overcome. Come learn how. Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
13. Kara Powell • Sticky Faith for Youth Leaders, Part I: The Sticky Gospel and Preparing Students for Lifelong Faith • Rm 301 B
Why is it that 40-50% or more of our graduating seniors will likely pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith? What is it about the kids who remain connected to Jesus that makes the difference? And what can we do in every grade of middle school and high school to help develop faith that lasts?
This two-part seminar series takes a practical look at deep research conducted by the Fuller Youth Institute on students just like yours. In Part I, we will unearth some toxic myths students believe about the gospel, the Bible, and life after high school. Thanks to case studies of real life churches, you’ll leave with all sorts of super practical ideas to use immediately in helping students experience the grace that saves them by faith (Ephesians 2:8) for the long haul.
14. Jordan Seng • Ministering in Power for Healing the Sick • Rm 304 AB
Supernatural healings played a big role in the outreach of Jesus and the early church, but just how does one go about healing people? Do you need to be specially gifted to heal the sick? If you pray for a person to get better and nothing happens, what should you do then? What should Christian leaders do to establish fruitful and safe healing ministries in their churches? Drawing on a helpful biblical model and years of experience in healing ministry, Jordan will discuss the practical matters of healing the sick and getting more power in your healing prayers. Jordan will share answers to common, potentially thorny questions, and offer battle-tested advice on getting your church started in healing ministry. A portion of this seminar will be spent praying for the sick and injured in attendance. James 5:14 “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.”
15. Meredith Sheppard • Lessons Learned in the Dark • Rm 301 A
With transparency and conviction, Meredith Sheppard conveys profound truths the Lord taught her during her darkest season, including a comparison between making diamonds and making mature believers.
16. Fr. Gladstone “Bud” Stevens • Being Christian in a Post-Christian Era • Rm 303 AB [CC]
Christianity is essentially a missionary movement. Our Lord commanded His apostles to go out to all of nations and thus make disciples of all people. This mandate defines the Church for all time, yet its actualization requires discernment into the signs of the times. In this seminar, we will explore secular culture’s call for a new approach to evangelization and a deeper commitment on the part of all believers to cooperate in the common work of drawing all things to Christ. Acts 17:22-34
17. Jim White • Goodbye, Shallow Hal: Cultivating Our God-Given Inner Attractiveness • Rm 319 A
In a world where outward, physical beauty continues to be sought-after, God reminds us that true attractiveness is inside. In this seminar, we’ll attempt to get past the “outward appearance trap,” and seek to cultivate the inner attractiveness God created us to have, as we learn from the life of David. Come expecting to watch a few movie clips, study scripture, and hopefully laugh together in discovering how eye-catching it can be when we are men and women of character.
1 Samuel 16:7
18. Paul White • Applying the Five Love Languages to Work-Based Relationships • Rm 320
Dr. White & Dr. Chapman have taken the Five Love Languages and applied them to the workplace. Learn how the five Love Languages and the five Languages of Appreciation differ, and how to use the Motivating by Appreciation Inventory (and other resources developed) to encourage your staff. 1 Thessalonians 5:11a “So encourage each other and give each other strength just as you are doing now.”
19. Cory Willson • Putting Business on the Mission Map: Creating Strategic Pastor-Parishioner Partnerships • Rm 318 A
Many Christians believe that their faith is relevant to all of life but experience frustration in connecting their beliefs to work. How can pastors learn from the complex challenges that their parishioners face on the job? And how can Sunday worship inspire and interpret what happens in the 9-to-5 work week? This workshop for pastors and business people will explore new paths for vocational discipleship. It will draw on case studies of pastor-parishioner partnerships that are attempting to address these challenges and will offer practical tools for cultivating this type of mutually enriching relationship.

1. Ron Arnold & Jay Jarman • Putting the “OUT” into Outreach • Rm 319 B
It’s easy for churches to focus on building our ministry and ignore the community in which God has placed us. In this session, we’ll explore ways to help a church shine the light of Christ by reaching out in love to the community.
2. Dave Barr • Experiencing Joy in Problems • Rm 323 A
In 1 Thessalonians 5:16, scripture commands us to “Be joyful always.” How in the world do we do that when we go through so many difficult problems in life? The Apostle Paul was an expert in experiencing joy from God through extremely difficult circumstances. In this session, multi-site church pastor Dave Barr will show you how you can experience joy no matter what you go through. Come enjoy his humorous and practical teaching to help you experience joy every day.

Psalm 25:4 “Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths;”
4. Francis Chan • The Future of the Church • Rm 311 [YA]
As the world changes, there are ways in which the Church must refuse change. We are not to “conform to the pattern of the world.” However, there are other ways in which we must see the signs of the times and take action to be the bride Christ intended. We will talk about the changes we, as individuals, must make which will lead to the health of the church in this next generation.
5. Don Cousins • Finding Your Calling • Rm 310 [CC] [YA]
God has a calling for you. The Bible tells you what it is. When you know His calling for you, you can give your life to fulfilling it. And when you do, you’ll be able to stand before Him one day and hear Him say…“Well done, good and faithful servant.” If you don’t know God’s calling for your life, come and discern what it is.
6. Doug Fields • Behind the Curtain: Tending to the Private Life of a Public Person • Rm 323 C
As a ministry leader, your life is being watched. Whether you like it or not, you’re a public figure! Beneath that public persona is a private world that must be healthy for the leader’s ministry to thrive. There is constant tension between these inner/outer worlds because heavy expectations that often dismantle the inner world of a leader. This workshop will address how to develop, strengthen and protect the inner world of a leader to survive the ministry marathon.
7. Mackey Hironaka • The Young and the Restless • Rm 318 A [CC]
You’re young (or young at heart) and you feel a call to ministry but are not sure what that entails. Or maybe you are doing ministry but not as effectively as you initially thought you would be. In this seminar, we will visit some principles that God blesses and lead to stable, fruitful ministry. Jeremiah 20:9 “His word is in my heart like a fire. I am weary of holding it in.”
8. Kenny Luck • Sleeping Giant: Giant Fights • Rm 328 [M]
Strong attitudes about God’s will involve strong actions toward God’s purposes. The questions now become: Now that I have resolved to fight for my identity as God’s man, what are my targets spiritually? What will be the obstacles? Who must I ready myself to overcome? How will I prevail? In Session 2 of the Sleeping Giant track, we will answer these questions together and learn how to fight and win the good fights of the faith as men.
9. Victor & Eileen Marx • How to Safeguard What Satan Wants to Destroy—Your Marriage • Rm 320

11. Norman Nakanishi • Change One Life, Change the World • Rm 305 AB [CC]

12. Aaron Niequist • Evangelical Worship Leading, Liturgy, and Me • Rm 303 AB
While leading worship in a mega-church for the last ten years (at Mars Hill in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Willow Creek in Chicago, Illinois), I’ve felt more and more drawn to liturgy – personally and also as a worship pastor. Its depth, reverence, and historical grounding have been profoundly moving. But how does this fit into an evangelical mega-church with big screens and moving lights? Is there a way to bring these ancient practices into a modern context, or are they fundamentally incompatible? In this breakout, I’ll share what I’m learning, what I’m wrestling with, and a few big mistakes I’ve made. Then, we’ll dream together about the future. 1 Peter 2:5-9
13. Shauna Niequist • Practicing Prayer, Rest and Self-Care as a Radical Act • Rm 301 A
In a culture that values speed and productivity over soul and slowness, it’s easy to find ourselves run ragged by the demands of ministry life, daily life, and family life. In this session we’ll talk about what it means to walk away from the pressure to produce and to reclaim a rhythm of rest, prayer, and self-care. Matthew 11:28-30 ”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
14. Kara Powell • Sticky Faith for Parents • Rm 301 B
As parents and grandparents, we do all we can to help kids develop a faith that lasts. Yet approximately 40-50% of graduating seniors pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith. Why is that? And equally important, what can we do NOW when kids are in preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, and college to help them develop Sticky Faith? Regardless of how old or young the kids you care about are, come and learn all sorts of research-based, practical tips from the Fuller Youth Institute that you can apply immediately to help kids embrace God’s saving grace (Ephesians 2: 1-10) for the long-haul. No matter what ages your kids, it’s never too early or too late to think about Sticky Faith!
15. Jordan Seng • How to Supernaturalize Your Church • Rm 304 AB [YA]
Let’s say you want to see your church move more in supernatural ministries like healing, deliverance and prophecy. How do you get started? How do you navigate the changes as a group? What will it do to “normal” discipleship in the church? Empowering individuals to do supernatural ministries is awesome. Empowering whole churches is even better. But it’s also challenging.
Jordan has been helping churches enter into supernatural ministries for over 20 years. This seminar will be filled with very practical tips and solid biblical wisdom. There are good reasons that supernatural ministries are such a big part of Christian history: they help us care for people, they deepen our personal life with the Lord, and they also radicalize churches.
1 Corinthians 12:1 “Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.”
16. Paul Sheppard • Overcoming Your Challenges • Rm 315
We all face challenges in life, and some of them threaten to end the good work God is doing in us. But God alone is writing the story of our lives and He loves to place a comma where others would put a period! In this workshop, we will discover how to tap into the grace that enables us to overcome the challenges that come our way.
17. Fr. Gladstone “Bud” Stevens • A Godless Age • Rm 322 AB
Secularism is a fact of our present life and impacts all dimensions of our Christian existence. People of faith need to understand the meaning of the term “secularism” and its implications for believers. How did it originate and what factors contributed to its emergence? Without some understanding of the phenomenon, our ability to bear witness to faith in our present historical moment will not be fruitful. Psalm 14:1-7
18. Paul White • Avoiding Staff Burnout With the Five Languages of Appreciation • Rm 324
The Five Love Languages have helped millions of couples. Learn how the same concepts can communicate authentic appreciation to colleagues (and volunteers) with the Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace. YOUTH TRACK ELECTIVES (Youth and Youth Leader Only)
20. Sarah Hill • The Less Desired Gift (Middle School) • Rm 312
In life we have much freedom to choose. Sometimes we choose what we think will satisfy, only to find ourselves on a spiraling path of trouble that affects those we love. In this session, I will share how one person’s choices had a profound impact on my life. When we come to understand the gift Christ came to give (at that time the less desired gift), we can be set free. With Christ we are never without hope.
21. Pami Ellis • Stepping into the Fog (Senior High) • Rm 313
Graduating from school can be daunting. Up until now, most major decisions have been predetermined: where you live, where you go to church, what school you go to, etc. But then what? What does God want you to do with your life? You might be asking yourself, “What am I really going to do when I grow up? Can God please just show me?” This seminar looks into what it means to follow “God’s Will” and might clear the way for some of the foggy adventures ahead from someone still figuring out her own fog.
22. Brandon Ahu • “God, I Don’t Get It” – Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? (Going Deeper) • Rm 323 B Sometimes, I just don’t understand God. Why do good people have bad things happen to them? When things like disease, accident, death or other hard issues hit people we love, sometimes it is hard to believe in a loving God. Have you ever felt like that? Although we may believe that God is sovereign, understanding Him and following Him through hardship is the difficult part. This session will give a general introduction to such a complex problem and strengthen our trust in the Lord. Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Seminar Series No. 3 • Friday, March 8 • 3:30 pm–4:45 pm
1. Elwin Ahu • Defeating Dysfunction in Families • Rm 315
How does a family deal with dysfunction in today’s world of divorce, blended families, step-parents and children? Dysfunction is no stranger to the family unit, dating back to Abraham, Jacob and David. And its target remains the same: striking the heart of relationships, especially between parent and child. The good news is that with God all things are possible. In this session, Pastors Elwin & Brandon Ahu, as father and son, will share how God was able to heal and restore their estranged relationship, only by His Grace.
2. Dave Barr • What Is Heaven Like? • Rm 318 A
Many of us have a vague idea of the place where the Bible says Christians will live for trillions of years. In this session, we will find out what the Bible says Heaven is really like. We will explore questions like: What will relationships be like? What will we do in Heaven? Will there be sports, arts and technology? Will we eat & drink? Will my pet be there? We will discuss these questions and more. You will leave with a renewed sense of focus to live life in such a way that it maximizes your relationships, rewards and responsibilities in Heaven.
3. Jim Burns • Creating a Media-Safe Home • Rm 323 C
Media is one of the strongest influencers of our kids and many parents feel ill-equipped to build a media-safe home. What about Facebook? Gaming? Music? Texting, sexting, and cell phone use and abuse? What about MTV and the latest teen movies? Jim will deal with the fact that cell phones are the greatest distributor of pornography and what you can do about it. He will tackle practical questions and issues of media and help you develop media, music and movie contracts with your kids. You will get tons of practical ideas and information you need to create a home that is media-safe.
4. Fernando Castillo • Stamping Our Ministry with the Spirit of Excellence • Rm 317 B
Everything God does is stamped with excellence. How can our churches and ministries reflect the nature of God and constantly improve? This session will look in scripture about the way God works in our lives and how we can use this template in our own personal lives and ministries. This session is ideal for any leader (church, marketplace, home, etc.) that is passionate about improving and becoming more like Christ.
5. Francis Chan • Getting Rid of Guilt • Rm 311
We all deal with shame in our life. There are things we don’t have peace about. Too often, we try to ignore or suppress. The Bible speaks about repentance which leads to life. We will be talking about specific areas in our lives that need to change.
6. Gary Chapman • Anger: Handling a Powerful Emotion in a Healthy Way • Rm 310
What is the source of anger? Why do all humans experience anger? What is the purpose of anger? How do we learn to control and process anger in a positive way? These are questions we will answer using scripture as our guide.
7. Jack Deere • The Contemporary Supernatural Ministry of the Holy Spirit, Part 1 • Rm 320
Jack will show that scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit is still speaking to and through believers today, and still healing people today. Part One will focus on healing and offer practical guidelines for praying for the sick. Jesus devoted a significant amount of time to healing the sick. The apostles did the same in the Book of Acts. The Holy Spirit gave gifts of healing to the Church (1 Corinthians 12:9) and told the church, “Earnestly pursue the spiritual gifts, especially prophecy” (1 Corinthians 14:1). There will be a time of ministry at the end of the seminar.
8. Doug Fields • Raising Your Own Kids While Doing Ministry • Rm 323 A
Our own kids bring up so many issues when we’re in ministry. What do we do with all the expectations? What if my kids don’t like church right now? My kids aren’t perfect, should I keep them hidden so people won’t judge our family? There are so many kid-questions that impact our ministry. In this workshop we’ll explore solutions for raising a healthy family amid ministry.
9. Kenny Luck • Sleeping Giant: Giant Breakthroughs • Rm 328 [M]
Men are like icebergs. We only like to show the tips of our lives while below the surface lurk negative emotions and major challenges few see. That is, until the darkness below comes out into the open in some form. And it will come out. But “outing” a man is never God’s preference, especially when “it was for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1). For a man of God, salvation means transformations. In session three of the Sleeping Giant track we move from general men’s issues to defining specific battles men face today and charting a clear path to victory.
10. Bob Marette • YOU, Yes, Even YOU, Can Memorize Scripture: A Daily Guide to Help You Hide God’s Word in Your Heart • Rm 322 AB
Attendees will not only learn people’s five main objections that keep them from memorizing scripture, but also reasonable answers to these objections. This unique process of memorizing scripture can be used by your church to provide a valuable tool for every church member and help them memorize between 12 and 52 (or more) verses each year.
11. Norman Nakanishi • Love Again • Rm 301 A
How do you repair love when it breaks? Beyond separation and through the maze of divorce, is it possible to reconcile in the face of love’s greatest betrayals? God’s word says yes. Why? 1 Corinthians 13:7-8 says, “It (love) always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” Visit simple transformational truths that will move you past reconciliation into the reclamation of your destiny.
12. Shauna Niequist • Crafting a Creative Life • Rm 303 AB
A session for writers, dancers, musicians, painters, filmmakers, photographers, creators of every stripe. We’ll talk about the challenge of finding time to create, the importance of sharing our work, and a few practical steps that can help each of us begin or maintain a thriving creative life. Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
13. Steve Peich • The Soulfully Smarter Marriage • Rm 305 AB
All too often, well intended and committed Christian couples struggle for many years toward obtaining the loving, intimate, and joyful relationship they long for. Many times the solutions lie not in simply trying harder, but in living smarter. Combining biblical wisdom and scientific data, this seminar will provide practical ways to improve marriages and deepen souls. We will look at top qualities characterizing a healthy marriage, as well as how to deal with anger, keep healthy boundaries, improve communication, resolve conflicts and much more. Join us as we discuss practical and biblical ways to work smarter, not just harder, for a vibrant and joy-filled marriage.
14. Patti Pierce • Finding God in the Wilderness • Rm 318 B
Did you know that the land of Israel—the Promised Land of milk and honey—is literally 65% either desert or wilderness? Perhaps this is an apt metaphor for our own lives as followers of Christ living in the Kingdom of God right here and right now. Wilderness happens: spiritual dryness and thirst; experiencing God as distant; excruciating seasons of waiting; life transitions between an ending and a new beginning. Though Hosea 2:14-15 God says, “I am now going to allure you; I will lead you into the wilderness and speak tenderly to you…making the door of trouble a door of hope”. In this seminar, we will explore ways to learn from and lean into God’s presence during our particular wilderness experiences.
15. Kara Powell • Sticky Faith for Youth Leaders, Part 2: Sticky Churches and Sticky Faith Families • Rm 301 B
Imagine taking a picture of the students in your youth group. Now get a red pen and put an “X” over 40-50% of your students’ faces because that’s how many drift from God and the church. The good news is it’s never too early to start building the relational net your students need to have faith that lasts, or what the Fuller Youth Institute calls Sticky Faith. In this second part of a 2-part series, come learn how to engage more adults from your church in the lives of young people. Come explore how you can partner with parents and help them talk about their faith (see Deuteronomy 6:6-9) in new and transformative ways. You’ll leave with all sorts of ideas you can use this week to build in teenagers the lifelong faith they need. (Note: If you missed Part 1, we’d love to have you join Part 2. We’ll do an initial quick recap.)
16. Brenda Schulte • Lessons from the Winding Road, Part 1 • Rm 319 B
Many women despair when they reach midlife – when life looks very little like what they imagined it would. When I was a young woman, I thought life should be a long straight road and the goal of a life well lived was to avoid bends and turns in that road. Twenty-six years of marriage later and twenty-two years raising six children, I’m learning that life with Christ is lived and experienced in the often frightening and unpredictable bends and twists and turns of life. This session is for young women who need to see a picture of their future and need the encouragement of a mentor and women in midlife or older who need to know they are not going crazy.
17. Jeff Schulte • The Voice of the Heart • Rm 324
Rage, anxiety, resentment, apathy, depression, lust, bitterness. What do these movements of the heart have to do with longing, desire, hope, wanting, faith, tragedy, innocence, healing, courage, wisdom, intimacy, passion, purpose, neediness, acceptance and freedom? How do I keep my heart alive to God and connected intimately to those in my life when so often I feel like I’m going through the motions…numb but wanting more because I know I was made for more? This session is about traveling the longest twelve inches on the planet — the path between your head and your heart.
18. Jordan Seng • Listening for God in Prophecy and Dreams • Rm 304 AB
In the Bible, God spoke to all sorts of people by means of prophecies, visions and dreams. Often, God spoke mysteriously or symbolically, which required listeners to interpret the messages before they became clear. In this seminar, Jordan will explore the different ways we hear from God today, with particular emphasis on identifying and interpreting his more symbolic messages. Jordan will draw on scriptural examples and years of experience discerning the voice of God in dreams and visions. This session will give you practical strategies for growth in hearing the voice of God, and suggestions for creating a safe and fruitful environment for developing a prophetic ministry in your church. A portion of this seminar will be spent ministering prophetically over those in attendance. Joel 2:28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.”
19. Sam Webb • Life and Ministry Beyond My Life • Rm 319 A
Each of us desires our life’s impact to go beyond our own life. Paul shares key principles with the leaders of the Ephesians church that he has lived by to influence future generations. His Apostolic challenge is as real for us today as it was then “…And now I entrust you to God and the message of His grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those He has set apart for himself.” Acts 20:32 (NLT) In this session we will have four keys for leaving a legacy to impact future generations.
YOUTH TRACK ELECTIVE (Youth and Youth Leader Only)
20. Troy Gall • Don’t Waste Your Life (Middle School) • Rm 312
The decisions we make in life are important. From the friends we hang out with to the choices we make while hanging out with them. This session will focus on encouraging Middle Schoolers to think about the company they keep and the impact that everyday decisions make in their life. During this session they will be encouraged to look honestly at where they are with their faith in Christ and if their relationship with Him is the driving force behind friendships and decision-making. Ephesians 5:15-17 “Be very careful then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
Proverbs 13:20 “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”
21. Mackey Hironaka • Friends fo’ Real (Senior High) • Rm 313
Friends that are fake, suck! Let’s learn to be friends that don’t suck…friends fo’ real.
Ecclesiastes 4:10a “If one falls down, his friend can help him up.”
22. Shaunti Feldhahn • What the Storybooks Won’t Tell You: The Secrets of the Opposite Sex (Going Deeper) • Rm 323 B
Do you want to save your marriage in advance – and even understand the opposite sex now? Researcher Shaunti Feldhahn has some compelling stories and surprising truths you need to hear. Based on ten years of personal interviews and surveys with thousands of men, women and teenagers, Shaunti shares a vital fact you need to know about laying a great foundation whether or not you are currently dating – and some even more surprising truths about how guys and girls think, not just so you have some fascinating new information, but so you understand the key truths that, if you know and apply them now, will change all your relationships for the better from now on. For example: Guys, learn what girls find most appealing (it is much different than you think), and why they sometimes do the confusing things they do – but you can understand them. Girls, learn what most hurts guys’ feelings (yes, something does!), what will make them want to walk over hot coals for you, and what they’ll never tell you but wish they could say. Romans 12:2 “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

3. Tony Campolo • The Red Letter Revolution • Rm 320
In this seminar, we will deal with the question of “What if Jesus really meant what He said?” While Evangelical Christianity has done a brilliant job of exploring theological themes prescribed by the Apostle Paul, it has not made many daring excursions into what God really expects the followers of Jesus to be and do. The lifestyle prescribed by Jesus is totally counter-cultural in that it rejects the dominant values of our society and calls us to a lifestyle that is in accord with what Lloyd has said is the “Kingdom of God.” Questions about such controversial subjects as capital punishment, nonviolent resistance, giving our money to the poor (Christian economics), new and ancient ways of praying, biblical views of environmentalism, etc., will be addressed. We will also look at how the Church should function in the midst of our modern world, going over forms of worship, who should be incorporated into membership, who should be ordained for ministry, and what should be expected of church members.
4. Gary Chapman • The Five Languages of Apology • Rm 315
When is the last time you apologized? What did you say or do? When people apologize to you, what do you expect them to say or do? Did you ever wonder why some apologies seem rather lame? The scriptures indicate that there is more to an apology than “I’m sorry.” In this session we will explore how to apologize effectively and learn to love even the difficult people in our lives.
5. Scott Cormode • Healthy Transitions in Church Leadership • Rm 318 B
This seminar is for congregations that anticipate making staffing changes in the coming years — especially with senior staff. Much of the important work begins before the official transition. This interactive seminar will describe how to manage healthy transitions in church leadership.
6. Jack Deere • The Contemporary Supernatural Ministry of the Holy Spirit, Part 2 • Rm 310
God tells us, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3). The Book of Acts is filled with examples of God speaking to his children in supernatural ways. Jack will talk about the different ways God speaks to us, how we recognize God’s voice, and the kind of people that God speaks to. There will be a ministry time at the end of the seminar.
7. Pami Ellis • Stepping Into the Fog • Rm 304 AB [CC]
What does it mean to be “called”? How do you know when to wait or take the step of faith? How do you discern God’s will? These are questions Pami Ellis struggled with as she contemplated becoming a missionary to the Philippines, the land where she grew up as a missionary kid. The answers may surprise you nearly as much as they surprised her.
8. Jeff Feldhahn • Decoding Women: You Can Figure Her Out and Make Her (and You) Happy • Rm 301 B
Every man finds himself confused at times by the woman in his life. When she is upset or you are frustrated, we are probably tempted to hope it just gets better on its own. However, a few simple, research-based secrets about how women think will show you see she is much easier to figure out than you ever imagined. This session will share the surprising truths you need to know, so you can make her happy, have peace in your home, and be the man that sets the example in his family, church and community for what a great husband (or boyfriend) should be. 1 Peter 3:7 “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way.”
9. Shaunti Feldhahn • Following Your Dream and De-Stressing Your Life • Rm 324
This very personal session encourages anyone with dreams for their ministry, business, marriage or family, or wondering how to get pass the stress of the every day grind to that abundant life God has for each of us. Shaunti Feldhahn started out as an analyst on Wall Street and never would have expected to be a best-selling author, popular speaker, and researcher on relationships. She has seen that when God gives someone a calling to join Him in what He is doing in the world, He will provide. She has also found that, along the way, so much of the stress we face doesn’t have to be there. Shaunti shares story after story of how God works behind the scenes and calls us to join Him to accomplish His will. Acts 16:10 “And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us [to go].”
10. Sheldon Lacsina • What Happens in the Home, Happens in the Church • Rm 303 AB
One of the top reasons leaders are not successful in ministry is not because they are not gifted, equipped or have the heart, but have to do with issues in managing the home. How can we be successful in ministry as well as our homes? Discover how God designed ministry and the home to function as one. Learn how practical leadership principals are refined in the home to be used for the success of the church. 1 Timothy 3:5 “For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?”
11. Kaye Lawrence • Back to the Bible: When Your Body Says No • Rm 317 B
An individual’s emotional makeup and response to continued stress may indeed be causative in many diseases that medicine treats but whose origin is not yet known — diseases such as scleroderma, the vast majority of rheumatic disorders, inflammatory bowel disorders, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer and legions of other conditions represented in each medical subspecialty. Many of us live, if not alone, in emotionally inadequate relationships that do not recognize or honor our deepest needs. Isolation and stress affect many who may believe their lives are quite satisfactory. However, repressing emotions disarms the body’s defenses against illness. Our physiological defenses go awry, becoming the destroyers of health rather than protectors. Health is not just a matter of thinking happy thoughts; sometimes the biggest impetus to healing can come from jump-starting the immune system with a burst of long-suppressed anger. People can enhance their ability to reverse this process when they understand themselves and become more self-accepting and assertive in their emotional coping styles. Exodus 15:26 “He said, ‘If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in his sight, and give heed to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will not bring upon you any of the diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.’”
12. Kenny Luck • Sleeping Giant: Giant Missions • Rm 328 [M]
Showing up. That’s what men do. Showing up for God’s missions on earth? That’s what men of God do. But where are we? Did the assignments vanish? Is there no need? Or have God’s men stopped risking for God and started retreating? When that happens people suffer and we live small as believers. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to save his life will lose but whoever loses his life for me and for the sake of the Gospel will find true life,” (Mark 8:35). In Session Four of the Sleeping Giant track we are going to put a stake in the ground, stop retreating, and start learning how God wants us to risk showing up for our assignments.
13. Noel Pabiona • Becoming God-Appointed • Rm 319 A [CC]
Description not available at time of printing.
14. Patti Pierce • What’s All the Fuss About Christian Spiritual Formation? • Rm 323 A
In recent years there has been a renewed interest in “Spiritual Formation” in many of our churches and seminaries. Still, there is confusion about just what it means to be “spiritually formed or transformed,” to be changed into the likeness of Jesus Christ.
Does it require a program or particular spiritual practices? How do I participate in the process of my own spiritual growth? We will explore what spiritual formation looks like in the midst of our ordinary, everyday lives. 2 Corinthians 3:18 “We, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his (Jesus’) likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
15. Fr. Gladstone “Bud” Stevens • God’s Answer to Job: A Christian Theology of Suffering • Rm 323 C
One of the obstacles to faith in God is the fact of suffering and the experience of evil. Our own age has witnessed evil on a truly monumental scale and this in turn has fostered a culture of disbelief. How can Christians speak to the anguish of men and women? What is the message of the cross today? Job 38:1-11
16. Sam Webb • Processing God’s Call in Our Lives • Rm 318 A [CC]
The claim of God upon each of our lives is unique in every way. Yet there are discernible steps or processes that our loving Father brings us through to fulfill His calling in our lives. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). We will discover together this process and purpose of fulfilling His will.
Seminar Series No. 5 • Saturday, March 9 • 10:30 am–11:45 am
1. Brandon Ahu • Love Them? I’d Rather Slap ‘Em! – Loving Difficult People • Rm 317 B
Have you ever wondered why God put difficult people in your life? Family, coworkers, friends, some people are just hard to love! If you could snap a finger and make them disappear, would you? You’re not alone! Many dedicated followers of Christ have a hard time with certain people in their lives and have a hard time loving them. The issue gets harder when Jesus says things like, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”, and “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another”. This session will help us to see how we can love difficult people and glorify our Father in heaven. Matthew 5:43-48, John 13:35
2. Dan Chun • How to Choose a Spouse • Rm 305 AB
With divorce rates so high it is pretty clear that we get fooled in marriage and, therefore, the selection of the right spouse is critically important. Pastor Dan used to run one of the largest singles ministries in the country and now some 20 years later, only 20 of the 250 who got married back then got divorced resulting in a divorce rate way below the national average. Hear some of the principles he taught those singles that have been tried and true in choosing a spouse.
3. Don Cousins • Life Verse • Rm 320
Every Christian needs a Life Verse, maybe several. Do you have one? Life Verses serve as the “footings” of life. You can and should build your life upon them. In this session, we are going to look at how to identify a Life Verse, why it’s important, and how to build your life upon it.
4. Jack Deere • The New Testament Reasons for Going to Church • Rm 315
Jack will contrast the contemporary church with the church of the New Testament. Today’s church-going often centers around a Sunday program and a building. The New Testament Church did not have buildings at the beginning. They gathered to hear God, worship God, be healed by God, be trained in their gifts, and give away gifts to others. This produced a church that was deeply connected to God and to one another.
5. Nancy Duarte • How to Put a Heartbeat into Your Presentations and Conversations • Rm 323 C
You think no one died from a presentation? Check this out: “Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead.” Acts 20:9 Why is listening to a story interesting but listening to a presentation boring? Granted, Eutychus died while Paul talked on-and-on, but Paul resurrected him from the dead. So if you don’t want to have to test your skills in raising the dead, come and learn how to apply the structure and principles of story into your next important piece of communication. This is more workshop than lecture. You will learn how to have audience empathy, incorporate the tension and release of story, determine a clear call to action and learn to address resistance to change.
6. Jeff & Shaunti Feldhahn • Helping Those Who Help Marriages: A Short Training on What Men and Women Most Need to Know About Each Other • Rm 310
This is special session will equip anyone who works to help marriages thrive—from pastors and marriage mentors to premarital counselors, to anyone trying to help a struggling couple. Marital confusion, frustration or heartache often stem from simple lack of the information about what the opposite sex needs. Even troubled couples often start out with good will and try hard to care for each other, but don’t “get” that they are trying hard in the wrong areas or doing something legitimately hurtful. This session will present a set of simple, life-changing factors that every man and woman needs to know. Published in the best-selling books For Women Only and For Men Only, this new, research-based knowledge has proven to be surprising, eye-opening and transformative for hundreds of thousands of couples over the last eight years. Learn about men’s private self-doubt, their need for respect and appreciation, the emotional importance of physical intimacy, women’s need for reassurance in the face of conflict, their desire for emotional security even more than financial, and the fact that, yes, women can be understood even when they seem confusing. James 3:13 “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct, let him show his good works in the meekness of wisdom.”
7. Sim & Mimi Fulcher • Six Musts for a Good Marriage: Practical and Basic • Rm 301 A
Basic and practical stuff, yes—but oh so important! After fifty years of marriage, Mimi and Sim are passionate to share (and field questions) about what they have come to feel are the musts for a good marriage—even a great marriage. They regularly teach a 12-hour course based on their book, Door to a Better Marriage. This session is based on that book.
Psalm 34:3 “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.”
Titus 2:4 “Train the younger women to love their husbands and children.”
8. Ross Gunn • Victorious Secrets – Living Holy and Blameless Before God • Rm 318 B
If only God is perfect, why are we struggling to do and be “perfect?” Is there another option? This session will provide hope and freedom for those who have lived under and/or have known the bondage of fear, guilt and shame while being a Christian. This session will also help put to death past accounts of unresolved sin and forgiveness. Ephesians 1:3-4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.”
9. Veronica Lamb • Church for Justice: Fighting Human Trafficking in Hawai‘i • Rm 319 A
The global fight against human trafficking is a great place for the Church to bring its love and power to bear. We have made strides in the cause locally. Advocates have finally succeeded in passing the first ever anti-trafficking law in Hawai‘i, and over the last few years ministers have helped rescue many dozens of women and under-age girls from the sex industry in our islands. What does it take for a local church to minister against human trafficking in our city? How can you be involved in advocacy, street rescue and victim aftercare?
10. Kaye Lawrence • The Brain-Soul Connection: It All Begins in the Brain • Rm 322 AB
Brain-soul connection involves everything we do. Understanding it will lead to a deeper knowledge of our most intimate selves and help explain human triumph and failure. We must understand that we are mind, body and spirit, and that each one affects the function of the other. People that suffer from trauma seem to lose their way in the world. After a traumatic event, the brain physically and chemically changes and affects connections that cause difficulty in how we face life. Thoughts and feelings affect our health. There is a circuit linking the immune system and brain that connects to illness, stress, mood and thought in a whole new way. The good news is that through treatment survivors can reverse the process and learn how to cope with these biological changes. Psalm “30:20 Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.”
11. Kenny Luck • Sleeping Giant: Giant Courage • Rm 328 [M]
Pressure reveals the strength of anything. As God’s man, courage in the face of pressure requires inner security, the right mentality, and a fierce loyalty to Christ to beat the odds. In Session Five of the Sleeping Giant track we will prepare to stand strong in the pressure connected to our commitments as God’s men back home.
12. Karen Makishima • More Than Just Childcare!!! Giving Children’s Ministry Purpose • Rm 324
When we begin to understand the importance of a child’s first 12 years of life, we discover that what we do in these formative years will last life long. Come and discover strategies to be intentional to assist children in their spiritual formation.
Matthew 19:14 “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’”
13. Don Piper • Jesus’ Departing Instructions for a Meaningful Life • Rm 311
If we know where we’re going when this life ends, shouldn’t we be having a better life on the way? We have a savior that is not only preparing a better place but He’s given us the instructions on how to live purposely until we get there. In John 13-17 you’ll find instructions for fighting life’s battles and preparing for eternity. In this session we’ll visit the upper room!
14. Eva Piper • This Can’t Be Happening to Me!!!! • Rm 303 AB
What do you do when the phone rings and you receive news that shatters your world? This session will share the other side of Don Piper’s best selling book 90 Minutes in Heaven. Don always refers to his wife, Eva, as the hero of the story. He survived, she overcame. Her story will encourage and give you practical tips for being a caregiver. You will also hear ways to minister to those in caregiving situations. No one should have to go through heartbreak alone. This session gives practical and meaningful advice for how to overcome tragedy and how to minister to those who are hurting.
Psalm 56:3-4 “When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?”
15. Brenda Schulte • Lessons from the Winding Road, Part 2 • Rm 319 B
16. Jeff Schulte • Nothing to Prove • Rm 301 B [M]
I have heard hundreds of men state, “I have nothing to prove.” Yet their actions betray their words because most men don’t know how to turn off the “drive” inside of them that says they must prove they are enough…at work, in marriage, in relationships with other men and the opposite sex, and with their children. Fear of failure. Performing to be loved. Achieving to be successful. What is the difference between passion and being driven by fear and insecurity? This is an honest practical session for men.
17. Juanita Smith • Introduction to the Power of Technology in Ministry • Rm 318 A
This workshop is a basic, non-technical conceptual course for church leaders who may or may not be technology savvy but understand the power and potential of using technology to expand ministry in their local churches, community groups, and beyond. The technology savvy Millennial Generation (ages 18-39) is the future of the church and is accustomed to communicating, socializing, and learning using hand-held mobile devices as their primary connection to the world. Traditional ways of teaching and reaching them are increasingly less effective. In this workshop, church leaders will be introduced to concepts that: highlight the necessity of embracing 21st Century tools for ministry, learn techniques of leadership in a technology-driven environment, explore methods of communicating a new vision for ministry through technology; and develop simple steps toward becoming a more strategic church, community organization that targets and appeals to young adults.
Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”
18. Gideon Strauss • The Art of Leadership • Rm 323 A
Max De Pree (author of Leadership Is an Art and former CEO of Herman Miller, manufacturers of the famous Aeron and Earnes chairs) writes, “The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant and a debtor. …Leadership is an art.” Artful leadership results in communities in which people can truly flourish, connect, and contribute, making a difference in God’s world. But there are obstacles to leading artfully. In this workshop, Gideon will tell stories of leaders like you who have faced and overcome significant obstacles to lead with skill and imagination, and offer five practices toward the truly human practice of work, leadership, and organizational life.
19. Paul White • ADD/ADHD: Myth, Excuse or Reality? • Rm 304 AB
Learn from a Christian psychologist who has worked with ADD/ADHD individuals (5 years old to adulthood) internationally for over 20 years. Gain perspective on the over-diagnosis and over-use of medication, while obtaining practical advice on understanding and living with ADHD individuals. Ephesians 4:2 “Always be humble, gentle and patient with one another, accepting each other in love.”
YOUTH TRACK ELECTIVE (Youth and Youth Leader Only)
20. Sarah Hill • Being Comfortable in Your Own Skin (Youth Girls) • Rm 312
How many of us at some point have felt uncomfortable with who we are? In this session, I address the many issues that young girls are bombarded with and how often in society they are left to feel imperfect, worthless and often hopeless. I will share the importance of finding your value in Christ and purpose in this world. This session will give biblical tools to set you free from the lies.
21. Kirk & Kyle Cousins • Separating the Men from the Boys (Youth Guys) • Rm 313
On the athletic field, we often hear it said of a great athlete — “he is a man playing among boys.” This is a high compliment to any athlete as it sounds like they are head and shoulders better than their peers. The same can be said on the spiritual playing field. Come and find out what it takes to be “a man among boys.” 2 Timothy 2:22 “Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
22. Robin Gunn • God’s Will for Your Life (Going Deeper) • Rm 323 B
How can you know specifically what God’s will is for your life? The answer is in His Word. Robin has received thousands of letters from readers around the world who are discovering and implementing God’s will for their lives. She will share these insights as well as how experiencing God’s will might look different than what you expected.
Ephesians 5:17 “Do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
